Nachom-ia Kumpasar: Unsung Music Legends of Goa

Nachom-ia Kumpasar, the Konkani film, means Let’s Dance to the Rhythm, which celebrates the ever-lasting legacy of Goan music, a tribute to the lesser-known heroes of the Konkani music world. Directed by Bardroy Barretto, the movie is close to Goans for its heart, its music, and more importantly for its revival of an era of Goan jazz. This is a movie inspired from real life. It reports that it was dedicated to musicians and singers who sacrificed everything for music but never received any recognition.

Why Was the Film Made?

The movie was born out of the rich musical heritage of Goa, particularly by Lorna Cordeiro, the “Nightingale of Goa,” and Chris Perry, the legendary composer and trumpet player. Nachom-ia Kumpasar is a movie that brings to the forefront all the struggles and sacrifices made by these artists and their contemporaries who composed some magical pieces in the 1960s and 70s but found themselves marginalized by the cinematic domination of Bollywood. It revives their legacy, reintroducing their music to new generations, so their artistry stays alive.

The Storyline – Nachom-ia Kumpasar

The film is set in the golden era of Goan music, where a young talented singer, Donna, inspired by Lorna Cordeiro, and a brilliant composer, Lawrence, inspired by Chris Perry, work their magic to produce a number of chart-topping hits. But their personal life forms a complicated love saga, full of passion, tears, and heartbreak.

Lawrence is married and has no way of balancing personal and professional life. Donna loves him so much that she sacrifices all her dreams and ambitions for the love of music with him. The story involves love, betrayal, ambition, and sacrifice, which are part of the many Goan musicians’ lives.

The Music

The soul of the film lies in its music. It has 20 iconic songs recreated to perfection and brings back the sound of Goan jazz and Konkani classics. Songs like “Nachom-ia Kumpasar,” “Aikat Mhozo Tallo,” and “Pisso” take viewers into an era when music was so pure and from the heart.

Ronnie Monsorate and Myron Mascarenhas have handled the music direction of this film. They, as such, retained the originality of those compositions but gave a new look in terms of fresh contemporary outlook. The vocal support, brass sections, and swing rhythms blend so very well with the very culture of Goan music.
